Try a HeartPOV Moment

A standalone demonstration of the HeartPOV storytelling format. Clara and Adrian’s dinner scene is an example, not a chapter of The Man Who Noticed Her. The cinematic moment is presented here as a written scene preview until a video is produced.

His Heart

Adrian has been invited to Clara’s family home. The house is full. Family members are talking over one another, plates are moving around the table, someone is laughing in the next room, and somebody else is trying to choose a karaoke song. Adrian has been doing his best to survive the questions from Clara’s relatives. But he’s also been watching Clara.

I’d been watching Clara take care of people all evening. She made sure her mother had what she needed. She remembered what her niece wouldn’t eat. She found another chair when somebody arrived late. She put more rice on somebody else’s plate before they even asked.

Nobody told her to do any of it. That was just Clara.

And then I realized something. Everybody at that table was eating except her.

So while she was distracted, I made another plate. Rice. A couple of pieces of lumpia. And a little of the dish I’d noticed she’d been sneaking bites of in the kitchen.

I put it down in front of her.

Clara looked at the plate. Then she looked at me.

▶ EXPERIENCE THIS MOMENT

Enter Clara’s point of view. Written preview of the cinematic moment.

Through Clara’s eyes, Adrian offers her a dinner plate. Relatives gather behind him; a cake box on the sideboard bears a handwritten label, “For Adrian.”

Her Eyes

You’re seated at the dinner table, seeing through Clara’s eyes. Around you is the sound of the family dinner—conversation, laughter, plates clinking. Maybe somebody has already started karaoke in the other room. Adrian is sitting across from you. He slides the plate toward you. Behind his shoulder, a small cake box sits on the sideboard. Its handwritten label reads For Adrian. His attention stays on you.

CLARA: What’s this?

ADRIAN: Dinner.

CLARA: I know it’s dinner.

Adrian smiles.

ADRIAN: Then why’d you ask?

Clara laughs. Adrian glances at the plate and then looks back up, directly into your eyes.

ADRIAN: You’ve been feeding everybody except yourself.

For a moment, neither of you says anything. He keeps looking at you.

CLARA: You noticed?

Something changes in Adrian’s expression. His voice becomes quieter.

ADRIAN: I notice you.

Cut to black.

Back Inside His Heart

Why did I say that? I notice you. Jesus.

I might as well have stood on the table and announced it to her entire family.

Clara stared at me. Her cousin stared at Clara. Her mother looked at me.

Her mother smiled.

Oh, no.

Her mother had heard me.

Later, when I reached for my jacket, Clara handed me a small box.

“For tomorrow,” she said.

Inside was a slice of the cake I’d mentioned liking weeks ago. On the lid, someone had written my name.

“You saved this because I brought you dinner?”

Her mother answered from the kitchen. “She put it aside before you rang the bell.”

Clara looked toward the kitchen. “Mama.”

I looked down at the box again. All evening I’d been wondering whether she would notice what I did. I hadn’t thought to ask what she might already have done.

That’s the HeartPOV Difference

First, you knew something Clara didn’t. You knew Adrian had been watching her. You knew why he made the plate. You knew there was already something happening inside him that he wasn’t ready to admit. Then you stopped reading about Clara. For a few seconds, you occupied her place. Adrian looked into your eyes and said, “I notice you.”

Then you returned to Adrian’s thoughts. But his view wasn’t the whole scene. Something visible from Clara’s place already meant more than he knew. A later moment gave it a new meaning. You can look back at the scene and see whether you caught it.
